Our Chat with Devon Maid Cakes

Plymouth & Devon weddings cakes

Pro-Story Photography, Based in Plymouth

Hello! We have recently had the opportunity to have an informal chat with Shelley, owner of Devon Maid Cakes. She runs a local Bakery here in Plymouth and creates remarkable personalised cake designs for her customers!

If you wondering which company to find for your wedding cakes then we at pro-story photography had the pleasure of sampling a cupcake from a stand that included a single-tier at the top. We had the opportunity to photograph a wedding that had Devon maid cakes as their supplier. We highly recommend her cakes for weddings and birthdays. You can like and follow her on Facebook with a link below.

When Shelley started Devon maid cakes

The first question we asked Shelley was how long she had been making cakes for. She told us, “I started making cakes for friends and Friends in 2018 but I have recently (As of December 2021) decided to make this my full-time job.” It is amazing how you developed your hobby and what you love doing into something big that you can enjoy doing every day! This is similar to us at Pro-Story – we love Photography, and capturing special moments in photos is what we have adored for years, and many more to come.

Her Inspirations for her cakes for Devon Maid cakes

We next asked what or who inspired Shelley to start her own business. She tells us; “I was facing redundancy. After nearly 20 years in retail, I wanted to go in a new direction. There have been many people that have inspired me along the way, family, friends and people on the internet such as Jim Rohn and Casey Neistat YouTube videos.” It must have felt like a big step walking down a new path, but as you found, that was a great route to take.

Decorating her wedding and Birthday cakes

Next, we asked Shelley about the wonderful cakes that she makes. She tells us that her favourite part of creating her cakes “apart from adding the decorations/hand made figures is hearing how happy the cake has made people, the pictures I get sent of the smiles and the kind words people say, helping to create memories – That’s priceless” We agree 100% – one of the kindest parts of what we do is hearing back and receiving reviews from our lovely couples about how thrilled they are with receiving their photos.

Next, we asked how Shelley created the fine details in her cakes, to which she replied with, “a lot of patience and good modelling fondant. Also having the right tools for the job” I feel a lot of people will agree or can relate. For example, if you were an artist or photographer, equipment and patience are often needed to complete your goal.

Continuing, Shelley explains how she creates her edible icing sheets. “I make most of the items on the cake by hand out of fondant icing, I also know a few local businesses that can create non-edible cake toppers and printed icing images.” I love edible fondant designs – however, on some designs, I’ve seen, they are so brilliant and cute that I don’t want to eat them and instead put them on a display!

Favourite Flavour for her wedding and Birthday Cakes

Shelley informs us her favourite flavour is coffee cake or lemon drizzle. Good choices! In fact, I haven’t had one of these in a while… (Completely not hinting). Next, she says that her favourite cake to make are ones that look like an object, such as a crisp packet, trainer, toolbox and others.

The most popular design she found was to be drip cakes or cakes with handmade figures. When creating new themes, Shelley listens to what her customers are aiming for, before getting inspiration from books, online or picturing it inside her head.

Our chat with Shelley from Devon maid Cakes about Devon and Cornwall Weddings

Moving onto Weddings, Shelley believes that the most popular time for couples to get married is in spring and summertime and her favourite moment during a wedding ceremony is when the bride walks in. This is a beautiful moment at every wedding and the tradition will always be astonishing.

Lastly, we asked her how long it takes to make a wedding cake; “That’s a tricky question as they all differ depending on the size and amount of details” She continues, “I can take up to a week to bake, cover, stack and make handmade details”
